Community-led restoration and land rights in the Sahel

Environment
Semi-arid Sahelian savanna
Dates
March 2025 - January 2029

In the Sahel, one of the most drought-affected regions globally, ecosystem degradation threatens rural livelihoods and increases poverty, malnutrition and conflict. Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) is a proven solution but faces barriers such as insecure land tenure, especially for women, young people, people with disabilities and pastoralists.

This programme addresses these challenges by combining participatory research, tailored capacity-building and policy engagement to strengthen local land rights and governance. By bridging the gap between research and practice, the initiative supports inclusive, community-led restoration that enables marginalised groups to invest in and sustainably manage their land, building resilience to climate change and improving wellbeing.
