The “Locally led nature restoration” community is a space for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers to exchange knowledge and experiences on nature restoration.
The REDAA programme team at IIED works behind the scenes to facilitate community activities that are responsive, relevant and reflective; encouraging collaboration, amplifying worldwide voices, and fostering innovation to build a stronger restoration movement. In doing this, the REDAA team responds to community members’ priorities, in particular, issues key to locally led restoration that may be overlooked or underserved.
To date, the community is engaging in a series of learning events focusing on the following themes:
- Strategic communications. A series of six two-hour online sessions focused on effective development and implementation of communications strategies in locally led restoration initiatives. The course draws from practical tactics born of the experience of REDAA partners. Following the course, a number of ‘drop-in’ online sessions will be organised in subsequent months to air queries, tips and lessons from experience.
- Gender equality and social inclusion. Following the production of a knowledge product on initial learning about gender equality and social inclusion, ‘drop-in’ online events will focus on learning about practical approaches and tactics for advancing gender and social justice in nature restoration initiatives. Initiative-specific work and online support sessions will also be planned. The community anticipates further online events on issues and experience with this topic in future years.
- Governance contexts – policy, power and politics – in which restoration initiatives operate. An online event open to everyone in the community exploring how governance dynamics affect restoration (e.g. through insecure tenure and ownership) and identifying how to engage with these dynamics and sharpen the governance of initiatives themselves to make progress. The event will be stimulated by a think piece and involve REDAA partners with critical experience. It will be followed by one or two cross regional or regionally specific events focused on fine-tuning initiative-specific actions.
In addition, every year we host an in-person event for some REDAA partners and key resource persons from related initiatives, held in a country where partners are active. The gathering focuses on networking, exchange and peer learning.
